Learn to sew! We’ll start with the basics, like the parts of a sewing machine and how to sew a straight seam and progress on to more difficult skills such as how to sew zippers. The novice sewer will make several useful projects that he or she will be happy to use, wear or give as gifts. Each of the fun-to-make projects focuses upon mastering certain sewing techniques, and as the course progresses, we will build upon those skills. As we advance, we’ll incorporate some special techniques such as bias tape-finished edges, quilting and embellishments to help our projects not only be fun to make but also to be as professionally constructed as possible.
Students can choose to use either of the following books: Stitches and Pins – A Beginning Sewing Book for Girls, or Buckles and Bobbins – A Beginning Sewing Book for Boys. Each book contains all of the patterns we will need for our projects. The clothing projects are sized for boys and girls sizes 8-16. Students will be responsible for purchasing their own fabric and sewing supplies. Each student will need to bring his or her sewing machine to class each week. It’s better to learn to sew on the same machine you will be using at home.

Summer Science Exploration Camp
Explore foundational concepts of science in this fun and sometimes messy class! Each week, we will delve into a different topic using discovery-based experiments. This means that students will discover basic scientific principles through experimentation. For instance, in our “Chemical Reactions” class, we will perform several different reactions to discover how to speed up a chemical reaction, signs that a chemical reaction is taking place, and how you can change different variables to get different results. In “Slime-Sci” we will use various slime recipes to explore properties of matter. Other topics will include “Water Works” (properties of one of the most important molecules on earth!), “Magnetism,” “Backyard Ballistics,” and much more.
